White Sox v. Cubs
There is a very funny ad campaign for New Era caps which has a
Cubs fan talking smack to a Sox fan in a Windy City bar. I think perhaps it must have been written by
a Cubs fan the Cubs booster seems to get the better of it on tv. I think perhaps the next series of ads might
take a look at history.
The last time the Cubs won the World Series, in 1908:
·
There were only 46 states, and that many for
only a year.
·
Theodore Roosevelt was president.
·
The Wright Brothers were measuring their
airplane flights in minutes, and they took on passengers for the first time.
·
Movies cost a nickle, were in black and white
and would not have sound for 20 more years.
·
The first Model T Fords were rolling off the assembly
line just about the time the World Series began. It cost $850.
·
The Cubs finished second in the league in
attendance with almost 700,000 fans.
Their star second baseman Joe Tinker made $3500, and Wrigley owned a gum
company but not a baseball team.
·
The Olympics that year featured tug of war as a
medal event.
·
Rex Harrison, Buddy Ebsen, Jimmy Stewart, Lyndon
Johnson, and Richard Wright were born.
Grover Cleveland, and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid died.
·
The Wind in the Willows was published, Shine on
Harvest Moon was a popular song (in terms of published sheet music as
commercial radio was still 13 years away).
·
A touchdown was worth four points and a field
goal totaled five. The NFL was still more
than a decade in the future. Jim Thorpe
was still in college, Babe Ruth still in the orphanage, and Mel Ott was still
in the womb.
The White Sox won the World Series
seven years ago.
